GIS consultant in Canberra: spatial analysis and web GIS.

I'm Supun (Vinny) Imbulana, a spatial and software consultant in Canberra. I help Australian government and enterprise teams analyse location data and turn it into GIS-based systems people use, with ArcGIS, QGIS, GeoServer, G-NAF, Geoscape, .NET and Azure.

What I do.

Spatial analysis

Proximity, catchment, overlay, network and coverage analysis that answers real questions from your location data.

Geoprocessing in ArcGIS Pro and QGIS, automated with ArcPy and Python so analysis is repeatable rather than a one-off desktop exercise.

Address and location data

Geocoding and address matching against G-NAF and Geoscape, so records line up with authoritative Australian addresses.

Cleaning and standardising addresses, matching them to G-NAF, enriching with Geoscape datasets, and reporting on match quality.

Web GIS applications

Map-centred web applications in React, Vue, Angular or Next.js, backed by .NET, Java or Python APIs.

Interfaces built for non-GIS staff, using ArcGIS, Google Maps Platform, Leaflet or OpenLayers, connected to the business records behind each feature.

Map services and GIS platforms

Publishing data through ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Enterprise and GeoServer as WMS, WFS and feature services.

Service design, styling, caching and security, plus migration between ArcGIS and open source stacks such as QGIS and GeoServer.

Spatial data platforms on Azure

Spatial data in Microsoft Fabric lakehouses on OneLake and Azure SQL, with Functions and Logic Apps for integration.

Pipelines that load, validate and serve spatial data alongside the rest of your enterprise data, instead of in a separate silo.

Open data publishing

Publishing spatial and tabular datasets through CKAN open data portals with good metadata.

Dataset structure, metadata, automation of updates, and APIs so open data stays current and findable.

Remote sensing and imagery

Classification and segmentation of aerial, drone and multispectral imagery with machine learning.

From annotation to model training with PyTorch and U-Net, based on my university research on multispectral UAV imagery.

Common questions.

Where are you based, and do you work across Australia?

I'm based in Canberra, ACT, and work with teams across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, remotely or on site in Canberra.

Which GIS software do you work with?

ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Enterprise, QGIS, GeoServer, ArcPy, Google Maps Platform, Leaflet and OpenLayers, with Australian address and location data from G-NAF and Geoscape.

Do you have government experience?

Yes. At SRA Information Technology I deliver spatial analysis, GIS-based solutions and enterprise systems for Australian government clients.

Can you build the software around the GIS, not just the maps?

Yes. My work covers both spatial and software, with backends in .NET, Java and Python, frontends in React, Vue, Next.js and Angular, and data platforms on Azure, Microsoft Fabric and CKAN.

Are you open to new roles?

I'm happy to hear about spatial, GIS and software engineering roles in Australia. Send me a message with the details.
